Why Pumpkin is Great for the Skin

October 10, 2018 by Savannah Rocker

Fall is officially here and one way to know that it’s finally fall is the appearance of pumpkins everywhere. There are huge bins of pumpkins outside the grocery store for carving fun. There are pumpkin candles and pumpkin soaps to make your house and you smell like pumpkins. There are pumpkin pies to eat and pumpkin spiced lattes to drink.

Another way to get your pumpkin on is to incorporate it into your skin care routine. Pumpkins are jam packed with nutrients that are great for skin health. Let’s breakdown some of those vitamins, minerals and other wonderful nutrients that make pumpkin so good for the skin.

  • Vitamin C– This vitamin is known for its super antioxidant powers and is an ingredient in many skin care products. So, why is Vitamin C so super-duper? Since Vitamin C is an antioxidant, it protects the skin from free radical damage caused by environmental factors such as UV rays and air pollution. On top of protecting the skin from premature aging caused by free radicals, Vitamin C also helps to correct existing conditions. It stimulates collagen production improving the skin’s elasticity and reducing the appearance of fine lines. The anti-inflammatory properties of Vitamin C help to calm acne and other types of skin inflammation.

Skin Care Products with Vitamin C- SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic, SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF, Jan Marini C-ESTA Serum/Cream, Epionce Intense Defense Serum and SkinMedica Vitamin C + E Complex.

  • Vitamin A– This vitamin is also likely to be found in many skin care products. It’s active forms of retinal, retinol, and retinoic acid are proven winners in the beauty business. The type of Vitamin A found in pumpkin comes in the form of beta-carotene, which gives pumpkin it’s beautiful orange hue. Vitamin A helps to strengthen skin cells and the skin barrier making the skin more resilient. It also soothes and hydrates the skin. The combination of strengthening and hydration gives the skin a firmer more youthful appearance.

Skin Care Products with Vitamin A– Jan Marini Luminate face Lotion MD, Jan Marini Age Intervention Retinol Plus, Jan Marini Luminate Eye Gel, Jan Marini Age Intervention Eye Cream, SkinMedica Retinol Complex.

  • Vitamin B– There are many forms of Vitamin B found in pumpkins, including Niacin, Riboflavin, B6, and Folate. Each form of Vitamin B has its own benefits. Niacin is regarded as one of the best forms of Vitamin B for the skin. It helps strengthen the protective barrier of the skin which seals moisture in and keeps irritants out. Niacin can be beneficial for many skin conditions, including rosacea, acne, eczema, hyper-pigmentation and dry skin. Riboflavin and Folate both aide in cell turnover, which help prevent acne break outs and creates a brighter complexion. B6 prevents acne in two ways by assisting in the repair of skin cells and by reducing inflammation.

Skin Care Products with Vitamin B– SkinCeuticals B5 Gel, Epionce Intense Defense Serum, and SkinMedica Redness Relief Complex.

  • Zinc– This amazing mineral is a super healer when it comes to skin. Zinc can be found in many topical creams for scrapes and burns because of its healing properties. It repairs damaged skin and soothes inflammation, both characteristics make Zinc great for those with acne prone skin. Zinc also aides in acne prevention by controlling oil production.

Skin Care Products with Zinc– TIZO3, Color Science Sunforgettable Brush-On Sunscreen, Epionce Lytic Tx, and SkinMedica Defense + Repair Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 34.

  • Fruit Enzymes– Pumpkins are full of fruit enzymes, which act like alpha hydroxy acids when applied to the skin. The enzymes exfoliate the skin by dissolving the dead skin cells that sit on top of the skin. Removing the dead skin cells leads to a brighter and smoother complexion. The enzymes go one step further by increasing cell turnover, giving a longer lasting glow.

Skin Care Products with Fruit Enzymes– SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense, SkinMedica AHA/BHA Cleanser and SkinMedica AHA/BHA Cream.

It is truly unbelievable how many components of pumpkin are great for the skin. These 5 are only the tip of the iceberg. Experts believe that there are over 100 beneficial compounds for skin health that can be found in pumpkin. To get all the benefits of pumpkin try Jan Marini’s Holiday Pumpkin Exfoliator or spoil yourself with a seasonal Pumpkin Facial!

Micro-channeling Technology

January 31, 2018 by Amy Marinoccio

Micro-channeling technology is a popular treatment among celebrities. Celebrities seek out this treatment due to their hectic life styles because there is no downtime and best of all, it’s painless. One technique is called DermaFrac.

What is DermaFrac?

DermaFrac is safe and effective for all skin types and improves conditions such as acne, scars, stretch marks, dehydrated skin, fine lines and wrinkles, and pigmentation. The special handpiece contains tiny needles that create micro-channel pathways for infusing of custom serums targeted to your skin care needs.

What serums are there?

Anti-aging “super cocktail” of peptides that stimulate collagen and fibroblast production while relaxing the muscles in a natural way.

Acne serum containing lactic and salicylic acid to reduce and prevent further breakouts.

Hydration is very important for anyone that lives in the desert. This serum contains hyaluronic acid to replenish dehydrated skin, making it full and plump.

Lightening serum contains kojic acid, a natural lightening agent to lighten age and sun spots.

Is there downtime?

No. You can return to normal activities immediately following the treatment. Makeup and other products should be discontinued for 24 hours.

Will it hurt?

No. Clients say that it is pain free. You might feel a slight suction and dampness.

How many treatments are needed?

Treatments are customized to your condition and needs. Typical clients have treatment every 3-6 weeks for best results.

If you want healthy, glowing skin without long recovery and the sticker price that comes with a painful laser resurfacing treatment, DermaFrac maybe right for you. Results can be seen within a few treatments and, if your skin conditions change, the serums can be adjusted to fit your needs.

MicroPeel 101

May 19, 2017 by Amy Marinoccio

MicroPeels are one of the most beneficial aesthetics treatment for smooth, soft, bright, and healthy. This treatment simple and quick, only takes about 45 minutes. Below are the steps and benefits of a MicoPeel.

  1. Dermaplaning- Your provider will use a sterile blade to removes dead skin cells and vellus hair aka peach fuzz by holding the skin taught and gently swiping the blade in an upward motion.

  1. Chemical peel- Depending on your skin type and concerns, there are a variety of peel options. Chemical peels are very beneficial after a dermaplaning. Our goal isn’t to cause visible peeling as it is to infuse the skin with ingredients that diminish lines, build collagen, and improve tone.

  1. Cryo Therapy- Cryo therapy is safe and has been used since the seventeenth century and is now making a comeback in treatments to fight the aging process. Designed to shock the body into action by increasing blood circulation and boosting the immune and central nervous systems. A small ball of CO2 is formed and swept over the skin to decrease inflammation, increase cell rejuvenation, improve skin tone, and reduce signs of aging.

Recommendations for continuing treatments are between 4-6 weeks because of cellular turnover and the regrowth of the fine vellus hair. Cellular turnover is the process by which our skin produces new skin cells which travel from the lowest layer of the epidermis to the top layer of skin the called the dermis and then shed off the skin. Vellus hair can restrict the penetration of skincare products to the epidermis making your products non-effective.  Most of the time what we are doing at home for exfoliation isn’t enough to remove the dead skin cells and vellus hair so it’s very important to have a professional remove the dead cells monthly.

Why Tanning Doesn’t Mix with IPL and Laser Hair Removal

October 24, 2015 by Jacquelyn Montano

Blog post 10.24.15It’s now fall and you might be looking to remove the damage done from the harsh summer sun or maybe you want to be hairless for the holidays, either way you need to be careful with that tan!

IPL and lasers are targeting brown pigmentation deep in the skin to bring it to the surface and eventually have it fade away. Lasers that remove hair are looking for dark hair to destroy the hair follicle. In both cases, the light from the laser and IPL are looking for dark color and this is why it’s important not to have a tan.

If you have a tan, lasers and the IPL won’t be able to tell the difference between your skin and the pigmentation. It will prevent the energy from passing deep into the skin to target the brown spots and will instead be targeting your skin. Likewise, the light from the Laser Hair Remover will first be absorbed into your skin before it can go down deep enough to reach the hair follicle.

Not only could this hinder your progress, but it can be harmful. Having procedures done that do not mix with tans can cause burns because darker skin holds in heat longer than lighter skin. It can also lead to blisters and hypo/hyper-pigmentation of the skin.

It’s important to know that in the eyes of the laser and IPL, fake tans are no different than tanning from the sun. If you know you’re going to tan or be in the sun, it’s best to wait 4-6 weeks after tanning to have a procedure in order to make sure the tan is gone.

Even if your tan is barely visible, it can still make a difference. Self-tanners, lotions, sprays or just being in the sun can be harmful to you when having an IPL or Laser Hair Removal procedure. Always be honest with your provider when asked if you have a tan or if you’ve spent any time in the sun.

Summer Skin Care Tips

July 10, 2015 by Jacquelyn Montano

ssktAnother hot summer is here in Tucson and we want to make sure your skin is ready!  Our licensed aesthetician, Kimberley, understands that the heat can keep you indoors, which is perfect for keeping our skin protected, but finding yourself out in the sun is inevitable. Staying consistent with our skin care products, treatments and even trying out a new facial, are great ways to keep your skin primed for the summer.

Here are a few pointers from Kimberley to make sure you stay looking your best:

  1. Drink plenty of water! We can’t say enough about this, especially here in Arizona. Drinking half a gallon of water per day will improve your skin’s texture and firmness. You will see a big difference in just one week if you are consistent. Hydration is critical in the battle against aging!
  2. Don’t forget to Dermaplane! Eliminate dull, dry winter skin and increase absorption of your favorite anti-aging products just by having a simple Dermaplaning treatment. Dermaplaning is a non-invasive process that eliminates fine hair (peach fuzz), smooths the appearance of acne scars, minimizes pores and exfoliates the surface layer of the skin removing any dead skin cells.  Your skin will literally glow!
  3. Protect your skin with a solid UVA/UVB sunscreen. It’s recommended that you reapply the product every two hours to ensure maximum protection. Some patients like to use a tinted sunscreen, such as SkinCeuticals® Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50. The Colorescience® Sunforgettable SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen is also a popular favorite.
  4. Don’t forget your anti-oxidants! SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic® is known for its advanced formula in the protection against extrinsic factors such as photoaging, weather and free radicals that accelerate the age of our skin. Another favorite is VisaoMD Vital C.  This product comes from a line famous for cocktailing together some incredible active ingredients to promote healing, reduce lines, increase collagen production and leave our skin brighter!
  5. Last but not least, stay on track with bi-weekly facials to keep your skin healthy and to naturally enhance that summer glow!

Why do we need facials?

January 6, 2015 by Christie Young

If you haven’t ever been exposed to just the luxury aspect of having a facial, then that alone is a treat worth signing up!  The true benefit of facials though far surpasses the pampering and feeling like royalty for the day.  Men, women, and teens are turning to these popular spa treatments today to improve not only the appearance of their skin, but for additional help in clearing up mild skin concerns.

The benefits of routine facials go beyond our much-needed home care practice.  Facials for skin problems and anti-aging, when treated by a professional, can drastically improve the overall look and feel of your complexion.  Our aesthetician Heather states “Facials are not only great for deep cleansing, exfoliating, and pore refining, they also boost collagen reducing fine lines and wrinkles. With the added bonus of reducing stress and cortisol levels, this leaves you not only looking great but feeling great inside and out.”

During a facial, revealing the freshest layer of your skin, improving circulation and advancing the overall skin renewal process allows product absorption to be at maximum levels.  Your hydration improves along with the skins ability to fully utilize the active ingredients in retinoids and spot correctors that greatly improve your skin’s tone and texture.

The anti-aging benefits are numerous! Many of the treatments are designed to offer anti-aging benefits specifically using antioxidants, peels, brightening properties and botanical extracts to defy the aging process.  This powerhouse of ingredients boosts collagen, firms, and tones the skin while reducing fine lines leaving a more youthful, rested appearance.

Let your aesthetician know at the beginning of your treatment if you have any skin sensitivities, this allows for a more tailored approach using the best products and techniques to achieve exfoliation without irritation.  Then sit back, relax and enjoy!
